SHIIAN Introduction

The Scottish Health and Inequalities Impact Assessment Network (SHIIAN) is open to anyone working or planning to work on health impact assessments (HIA) and health inequalities impact assessments in Scotland. The network has been running since 2001, following the recommendation of the Review of the Public Health Function.

The network aims to promote a Health in All Policies approach in Scotland, and to increase the use and quality of Health Impact Assessments and improve consideration of health issues in other assessments, in order to contribute to improvements in policies and plans that will enhance population health and reduce health inequalities.

To join the network please contact: nhs.healthscotland-scotphn@nhs.net

SHIIAN is led by a steering group, which meets to agree our workplan. Our current workplan focuses on building capacity for HIA and Health in All Policies in Scotland. You can access the current workplan here.

Training and capacity building

SHIIAN can provide training, advice and support on HIA and HiAP for colleagues working in NHS Boards, Local Authorities and partner organisations in Scotland.

To discuss this please contact Dr Margaret Douglas, SHIIAN chair, at margaret.douglas@ed.ac.uk

Recent and previous work

SHIIAN publications include evidence reviews and HIA guidance. These are available under ‘SHIIAN Resources & Information’.

SHIIAN has contributed to the Public Health Reform Improving Health Commission. You can read about Public Health Reform in Scotland here: https://publichealthreform.scot/

SHIIAN supported the HIA of Unconventional Oil and Gas, led by Health Protection Scotland. Reports on this HIA are available at: https://www.hps.scot.nhs.uk/a-to-z-of-topics/unconventional-oil-and-gas/
